How’s the hang time of this vintage compared to 2023? It’s been a very cool summer in CA.

Here in that Santa Cruz mountains our harvest is under way. I know people are talking about the cool summer but having just lived through it, it wasn’t actually that cold. I assume that the lack of major heat waves shifted the average temp lower but this harvest seems to be perfectly on schedule with average years

I hope it’s alright to post this here?

Looks like a two day rain event coming Mon-Tues, at least for Mendo.

Finally brought in that Pinot that was sitting at 20 Brix, now at a whopping 22, but flavor and acids are right. @Adam_Frisch would approve.

Rain coming to the north coast Monday thru Wednesday.

Helped sort some Santa Cruz Mountains PN Friday. Saveria Vyd for Makasi Wines and Mindego Ridge for Sandar & Hem. Both looked and tasted great. The only number I caught was 22.5 brix for the Saveria, which is normal. I’d guess the Mindego was about the same.

Is the current rain event in NoCal, Oregon causing any issues with harvest?

@Roy_Piper released a video a few days ago with his POV. Not sure what actually developed

A winery in Livermore told me this year would be a really good quality harvest I’m pretty new to all of this but they went on about how the grapes are growing long into the season and haven’t reached the proper size to be picked yet. Was this false info?

Inland Mendocino county got 1.25". That’s not chump change.

We haven’t goodness much where I am (south of Napa), but the main issue would be with finicky grape varieties. I used to work for a Zin house and rain is like cryptonite for zin- just look at it wrong and it will start to mold. It can also be a problem for varieties that form really big tight clusters like Petite Sirah, although since it is thick skinned and very tannic we were usually able to mitigate mold damage with added tannins.

Thanks for the reco of Roy Piper’s video - I watched that and he also posted a follow-up a couple of days ago. Looks like things are working out for his grapes by waiting it out. Very interesting and informative videos.

Just happened to look at this thread right now.

I picked Moulds today. They thought we might have rain as we picked but luckily it did not materialize. Waiting through the 3 days of rain really paid off. Gained 1 Brix and probably dropped some acid. Berries softened a lot and the color comes out much easier now. Seeds got a little more brown. Will take a lab sample tomorrow. Tastes really good a surprisingly ā€œfreshā€ for Cab nine days into October.

We are set to get three more days of rain starting Monday. No way the fruit would have survived that, so I got off the best day I could have. Pretty much 95% of the valley floor will be off by end of day Saturday, leaving only about half the hills and mountains to pick.

Watching that juice go down the drain hurt!

Roy: Why not make a Rose’ with the saignee juice? Water back to 21B or so and add acid to ph<3.4 - it would be yummy!

We got enough rain this week to put an end to fire season in Sonoma County. A welcome annual milestone these days.

Helping pick Cabernet Saturday and Sunday, then getting Sangiovese and Nebbiolo in a week. All from Santa Cruz Mountains.

Where does the Nebbiolo go?
