2024 Finger Lakes Vintage Report

2024 seems to be a very good vintage in the Finger Lakes. Trip back there in the fall has me more interested but who knows when I will ever get back there. At least shipping from there to NJ/NYC seems reasonable. I like off-dry Riesling so lots to choose from and the reds are getting better, to me the varieties most associated with Austria seem appealing.

Thanks for intel. Haven’t been up since year before last.

Looking forward to seeing how it compares to 2020, the last “ideal” vintage.

The 2020 reds are spectacular! However I think the whites had a bit too much sun and sugar even for the “dry” style Riesling compared to other vintages such as 2017, 2019, and 2023.

Thanks, Marc. My first visit it up there in 2023 left my quite impressed, despite the fact that a lot the wines we were tasting were 2021s, which was a difficult vintage.

Hey John, I did notice that more than a few wineries pour vintages one would think are “not current.” Hard to say why, product not selling through or some other reason. I doubt they are holding back releases like the wines are Grand Cru Burgundy…

I’m sure that was true with some of the '21 whites we were served in 2023. I had been disappointed with some '21s at Forge. A day or two later, the server at Red Hawk Ridge admitted that it had been a very difficult vintage, and that was borne out by some of the Forge and Red Hawk rieslings from that year. They weren’t bad, but they were less interesting than the adjacent vintages.

Not technically a 2024 vintage issue but this seemed like the closest place to put this. Are there smoke taint concerns from the canadian wildfires for 2025? I’m not sure how much smoke there needs to be or how close, but in upstate NY it definitely smells like campfire and it’s very noticeable in the air. I’d assume a few days isn’t a huge concern compared to the california wildfires in 2020, but I also wonder if it’s on people’s minds still.
