I am really itching for some info. on the 2023 vintage in Germany. I found this excellent piece written by Al Drinkle of Metrovino, a Canadian wine importer. Still waiting for the @collinwagner vintage overview!
„ The wines possess a breathtaking, spellbinding sense of harmony“
Soso………what did I tell you several weeks ago.
You know I listen to EVERYTHING you say about German wine!
Me too!
However, everything I’ve heard has been great!
I keep expecting MFW to arrive with the first part of the vintage report, but that can still be a couple of weeks away.
I have made quite a few orders for 2023 Mosel/Nahe Riesling with delivery for November, with the exception for:
These were ready for delivery and there was a cool lull in the weather which permitted safe transport.

I just made my first 2023 purchase today! My first case of 2023 Ulli Stein Blauschiefer.
The new issue of Mosel Fine Wines might be published at the beginning of this week.
The key word is “might.” I don’t know for sure.
No worries Lars, nobody’s holding you accountable
We all know that Jean and David are heavily occupied with compiling their stories, reports and tasting notes. They are as eager to publish as we are to receive!
And their day jobs
I already bought a bunch of 23 EP. It’s unfortunate these days that they release the allocations before any reviews. But I’d imagine that’s actually by design.
Why is everyone so damn cynical. As you know it has been done that way in Germany for years. Do you really think German producers of the type we all know, love and drink are sitting around and saying hurry, hurry lets offer the wine before someone reviews the vintage. Sorry I am just a glass half full person and love wine for so more than just scores and great vintages.
This!
The wineries (mostly household farmers) live their lives, everyone else their own.
I love wine too. But great vintages make better wine.
Al Drinkle is a great guy. He has contributed articles on wine to The Art of Eating and is one of our importers in Canada. We also have one in Montreal and one in Toronto.
@Lars_Carlberg don’t mean to put you on the spot but do you release your wines to get ahead of the reviews?
Yes, we do. No, but seriously, we tend to release the wines before the reviews, because we bottle earlier than, say, Joh. Jos. Prüm. We would have no problem with our wines being reviewed before release. It’s just that we don’t want to wait and need to allocate the wines.
Thanks for the vintage report. Soon enough we will all taste the wines.
And I see he couldn’t resist taking some nice shots at German chardonnay!
Interesting. I would have thought you could care less about the reviews. I am sure some larger producers that have a lot of wine to move do.
I had some 23s a few weeks back. They were clean and crisp.
Interesting report. Bittersweet for me, as I will, for the first time since the 1995 vintage, not be pre-ordering or indeed ordering at all.
Need to control the FOMO.
