Immediately ordered. Will be my only remaining mailing list going forward.

Muling vino over the border and thru country has gotten let’s say, more complex.

Got the regular 12 pack + 2 magnums as usual.

I dunno, man, that California Redemption Value (CRV) “tax” might be a deal killer.

They seem like super nice people so happy to order from them.

I did not order this because I opted for 2 cases and 4 mags of the 70-year old vines bottling.

Just kidding, in for my usual order.

Order in. Birth year wine for my kid so these won’t see the light of day for 20+ years.

I asked Graham for his thoughts on 2015 vs 2016:
Both wines are showing great with about a 6-8 hour double decant. The 2015 has evolved beautifully over the last 10 years. It was a drought vintage so there was lots of red fruit, structure, and power. That has all integrated well and should be delicious with some air. The 2016 was a bit more of a balanced growing season and that shows in the wine as well. More dark fruit, minerality, and the tannins are integrating nicely. I would say if you want something with a little more fruit go with the 2015. If you want something with a bit more tension and power, go with the 2016. Either way I am sure you will enjoy it!

Easy buy, in

The last bottle we drank was a 2015. Fabulously scrummy! I reckon 2017 will be another relatively early maturing vintage. Stash your 2016 and 2018. It’ll be yonks before they’re ready.

Had a 2018 for Christmas Dinner. Was delicious and really sang Oakville cabernet. Would imagine can age for 10+ years showing primary fruit in my opinion.

Such a bummer about Constellation winning the “legal” day, but I don’t think MacDonald labels have ever had the wording To-Kalon right? Appears upthread that Constellation is going to make & market wines from the To-Kalon vineyard rather than a brand with fruit from anywhere…time will tell.

It’s a bit more interesting - to the best of my knowledge Constellation at one point agreed to allow MacDonald to put To Kalon on their label if they would drop their goal to name the creek To Kalon. The response was “my integrity is not for sale” or words close to that.

To Kalon Vineyard Company was created by Constellation in 2019

The labels say either HWC or Highest Beaut

Yup, have had some. We’ll see if we start to see fruit from other than To Kalon from that brand. Really hope not…Thus far they are adhering to a place. Hope to see that continue.

Grateful I happened to look at this thread, the offering email ended up quarantined in my Spam, but saw this logged in and good to go. Thanks!

So this is done / approved? Is there any way to dispute or write in against this change? I would assume every other to kalon producer would have been against this and already did complain? Just nuts to want to take away the geographic designation.

that’s that sad part. People just flipping and keeping it from people that would enjoy and resell. Good for them since there aren’t many profitable flips left but you wish it wouldn’t happen.

Every other can be defined on one hand:

Beckstoffer- has already renounced the decision. He has the most to lose IMO as he is allowed to pass through the To Kalon designation on the grapes he sells. He’s happy as long as Constellation doesn’t downgrade the name by selling To Kalon from not To Kalon. At that point, he may choose to litigate. Right now he is not really damaged, so who needs an expensive legal fight?

UC Davis
Not sure if they have a strong stance but not a commercial enterprise.

Detert - the MacDonald’s cousins. They probably have the most to gain if they could use To Kalon. But again, would take a lot of capital to keep pushing. The MacDonald’s seem to want to keep the issue open to persue. Probably looking at their options and cost of those options.

Opus One - 50% owned by Constellation

Most of that is not what I would categorize as flipping. Buying a bottle of wine holding onto it for 5 to 10 years and then deciding to sell it is not flipping.

Flipping is buying a current vintage and immediately reselling it. One of the listings that is always up there is for Kogod Wine an early supporter. He gets a couple three packs each year and sells them for top dollar. I don’t know that there is another retailer like that.

That wine searcher link represents a few dozen bottles across a dozen vintages. These bottles getting resold is still relatively rare.
