2022 - Burgundy - What are you buying

So far, David Moret, Hubert Lamy, Anne Boisson, Domaine de Chassorney, Buisson-Charles, Marc Morey, Prieur, Leflaive, Comte Georges de Vogue, Grivot, Perrot-Minot, Guffens-Heynen. Recently I decided I am not buying anymore the slender, citrusy, green, modern Meursaults with the over-exaggerated early harvests, and going for old-school, late-harvested ones. Accordingly, Antoine Jobard and Jean-Marc Roulot have been excluded from my buying program, Lol.

If you don’t mind me asking what would you recommend from this producer? Reds or whites or both? Any specific highlights? I’m seeing plenty of availability but not that many CT notes to give me any guidance.

Bought so far (some are just singles or a pair).

Bertheau
Hudelot-Noellat
Domaine Dujac
Boigey-Freres
Les Horees
Nicolas Faure
Domaine Cassiopee
Camille Thiriet
Maison Glandien
Jean-Pierre Guyon

Ummm, Beaujolais, Pouilly-Fuisse, Chablis and Volnay, mostly village. Thought structure/density of the vintage was good for both whites and reds during en primeur tasting. New wines I bought were Genot-Boulanger Nosroyes and Montille Beaune Greves.

One of the reasons I’ve generally stopped posting on this forum is to avoid discussions like this. ā€œhow they handled the weatherā€ for 2018 - what does that mean? Did they move the vineyards further north? It just sounds smart. I tasted 2018 in barrel and the producers were not prepared for the scope of the vintage. One of the producers who made reasonably good 2018s told me the vintage reminded him of 2003 while thinking out loud. Even the better wines are usually easy to call blind as 2018, especially with air. The ā€œsplit between overripe and nice early drinkersā€ isn’t a split, it just means lower acidity, which competent palates will consistently pick up. There are people who like lower acidity white Burgundy, and that’s fantastic, but it’s a consistent throughline.

As for 2021, I had lunch with a producer last week who chose another winemaker’s 2021 blind that I got wrong because it had so much concentration; ā€œquite unusual for 21, right?ā€ was his comment. It was unusual because 21 is otherwise lean and acidic.

Re. question about David Moret availability above… David Moret did not produce many bottles of 2021, but, yes, in 2022, he has a lot more. His Corton Charlemagne GC is probably his best wine–ask Brigitte Macron, I believe it is her favourite wine in the world.

His firsts from Puligny and esp. Meursault are also worth searching out. He makes a lot of money as a farm equipment salesman, and winemaking is more a hobby, so he does not have to finance his operation through high prices. He uses new oak, but it blows off rather quickly, and his wine has a refreshing minerality… After PYCM blew up, I had to look for other options… David Moret fits the bill.

Very informative, thanks!

Has the winemaking at David Moret changed a lot? I bought 2016 chassagne villages and corton Charlemagne and started to open them around 2020. All bottles were premoxed so I wil not buy again unless there is a real reason to expect the issues with premox are solved.

BTW Georges Noƫllat (Maxime Cheurlin) did really well in 2022, I tasted most of the wines twice and there is an exceptional balance in all the wines, I think the best collection Maxime has made so far. So I bought a lot (but probably not enough

Thanks! They are one of the late EP releases so that’s very helpful for next month.

I will probably jump on the Les Foliateres from Chavy, once released

Sorry to hear you had bad luck with the 2016s. Out of >50 consumed, I have never had a premoxed David Moret bottle.
