2021 Barolo

We went to Osteria Veglio on our honeymoon in 2016 during the white truffle festival and it was a magical experience. Such beautiful simplicity in their food.

I’ve been to both places, though it was in simpler times before Barolo became a tourist destnation. They were great 20 years ago. I remember a Monprivato on the Veglio terrace in 2010. More e Macine in 2001 if I remember correctly.

Hmm, all I could think of is Piero Busso? That’s a Barbaresco producer though.

Yes! That’s it. Didn’t recall it was Barbaresco. Seems I didn’t recall much, lol.

Because of the Roddolo wines I tried to find other producers from this vineyard and tried a few vintages of Benevelli although I don’t have much. Pricipiano also makes one that is also very good.

I was just going to suggest the 2021 Principiano Ravera di Monforte as well. Beautiful wine.

I returned 10 days ago from the Langhe. Best 2021 I tasted was Massolino Parafada. Best range of wines was from Azelia, particularly Margheria and Cerretta.

I personally think 16>21>19, more extreme weather events in 19, whereas 16 & 21 have more balance and freshness. I absolutely love the 20’s, accessible now but absolutely also have stuffing to age, 20 Monprivato is the best young Monprivato I’ve ever tasted. I’m not necessarily concerned about 30+ year wines, as I generally prefer my Barolo’s younger than that, I like some freshness to the fruit before it gets all dirty and dried out. I’m pretty sure all of mine will get opened long before that mark anyway, as that would put me close to my 80’s in age.

Here’s some others that I don’t believe were mentioned…

Ca’ di Press - newer producer, wines have gotten better every vintage, Barolo bottling comes from Perno in Monforte, and their LN is a smasher on the cheap

Crissante Alessandia - wines have seen a significant jump in quality since Alberto took over in 2013ish, especially 19-21. they started bottling a Monvigliero in 20 iirc, Capalot is great also and love the La Morra commune bottling.

Ferdinando Principiano - these used to be a little more on the wild side and somewhat inconsistent, but have recently been more dialed in and focused. tasted through the whole lineup there earlier this year, Serralunga is solid, Ravera di Monforte is great, but also keep an eye out for their Boscareto bottling. They don’t bottle it separately every year, but they make it 100% whole-cluster when they do, and the vineyard is right next to/below Francia.

Also love Piero Benevelli & Trediberri in Barolo, and Piero Busso & Manuel Marinacci in Barbaresco.

One of the aspects of Massolino’s 2021 Parafada that stood out to me was the alcohol was 14%, in comparison to the 2020 Parafada that clocked in at 15%. The difference, for me, is huge. Much fresher, and much more food friendly. I also had Azelia’s 2014 Bricco Voghera Riserva and it was drinking very well for what is considered to be a down vintage. Much more classic flavor profile to me which is causing me to think that these warmer/dryer vintages have not produced wines that I appreciate. In conversations with wine producers, they point to the dry conditions as more of a factor than heat. Let’s hope the Langhe gets some snow this winter.

These were the top wines from the 21 Vinous Barolo masterclass in Miami a few weeks ago. Can’t go wrong with either.

I would add the wines from Luigi Baudana made by Vajra. These are just outstanding wines and the 21 Cerretta was one of the best wines from our trip in May. I also loved their 20’s. Really terrific wines. Baudana Baudana and Cerretta in particular.

I really liked the 2021 GD Vajra Coste di Rose. More elegant side of Barolo. Absolutely beautiful. Right at your price point too.

Massolino’s 21 Barolo Classico is impressive too. I know in the past it was a blend from all their estate vineyards that they didn’t bottle a SV from. Not sure if that’s still the case. To be transparent, the company I work for does represent Franco’s wines.

I am not an expert on Barolo as I am more of a Burgundy guy, but I have had a good number of Barolo over the past 15 or so years. Anyway, in general 2021 Barolo for me is absolutely classic and delicious, at least the ones I had below while I was in Piedmont this month. They were open, yet structured but the balance was amazing, giving so much pleasure in their youth. Will these close up? I have no idea but the material is there in spades. The 2021 Monvigliero is the best young Monvigliero I have ever had, beating out 2017, 2019, 2020, all of which I had in about the same time frame from release.

Barolo is really churning out epic vintages - 10, 13, 16, 19 and now 21. It’s getting costly!!!

I completely agree. We were in Piedmont in September and tasted mostly 2021 vintage. Very good across the board with some really lovely wines. We also tasted some barrel samples from 2023 at Giovanni Rosso and they were really quite approachable and tasty. Could be winemaking style but it gave the impression of an early pleasure vintage that might not need decades of time. Again, super small sample to draw a conclusion from but that was my take.
