But I’ve got to say, with the Boudin Noir aux oignons and pommes de terres sautées à l’ail, this wasn’t a waste !
To quote @Tomas_Costa, I ain’t no Jacobin either. I got a lot of joy out of that. And I’ve got another 11 bottles in the father in law’s cellar, family event vintage and all. They won’t wait ten or fifteen years though. This will get drunk every couple of years or so while the fruit is all in your face.
This is a big blast of blackberries, black plums with a little bit of red berried acidity. The oak and cigar box follow with just a hint of pyrazine and herbs showing up on the finish to go with the slight crushed stones end note. Mind you, this was splash decanted and drunk within 1 hour of pulling the cork. What it’s lacking in savouriness and structure it’s making up with luscious fruit and silky texture. Long finish but I don’t think this will be better in 10-15 years.
This ain’t a Sociando for the purists but it’s wide open and pretty layered and complex still. Good wine but atypical for the Château. I’ve got some 1996 on the way that should show rather different !
Interestingly enough, everyone slagged the 2003 vintage of SM for being too hot…turns out it was one of the best vintages ever for Sociando. Maybe 2018?
I’ve had a lot of that 2003. It’s quite nice for a 2003. SM handled that vintage better than most, but it is nowhere near the top of my list for the best SM vintages.
Day 2: 1 glass left from last night. Tannins are showing up with more grip but the alcohol is also sticking out a bit more. Ain’t no one gonna mistake this for a cool weathered vintage.
Hey a neighbor just told me I look 45, and a young associate just told me that I am “young at heart” - though it did sound playfully condescending - so I just might celebrate my 50th again every year! Although, my 55th at the club during the height of COVID arguably was the best, risk-reward and all that!
I mostly picture him riding an old bicycle with a bag of fresh produce in the front basket and, most importantly, a fresh baguette sticking up out of said bag.
