I can only speak for our situation. We enjoy drinking Screaming Eagle on special occasions and we accordingly purchase the wine for personal consumption. We have never “flipped” the wine, but we certainly do not fault anyone who chooses to do so.

This. Exact same boat. We have used it in a number of charitable situations where we give away dinners or tastings at our home that feature Screaming Eagle and other so-called cult wines. They are big hits and raise a lot of money for worthy causes.

That’s different than flipping for profit, obviously (and commendable), but it shows that the wine is no longer being purchased to drink, and that the price no longer reflects its value as a beverage. The price is a function of SE’s value as a symbol, whether of generosity, commemoration or ostentation.

I think you infer from my post something I didn’t say. We do drink the wine, as well as offer it in charitable situations. My guess is that we drink 2 and donate 1 to a tasting where we are present and drinking it. For the record, I love the wine. I find it to be a textbook expression of a balanced cabernet.

If there is a valuable wine that we no longer have a taste for, we drop off the list and let others have their turn. I personally don’t agree with flipping, although once someone buys a wine it is their’s to do as they see fit. Just not for me.

Been on the list since 2009. Offered 1 2017 Magnum and a 3 pack of 2006. I buy everything allocated, including The Flight and Bonneau du Martray. My offer letter did not mention the number of 2017 magnums made. The letter does mention that “a very limited offering of the 2017 Screaing Eagle The Flight” will be available “in the Fall.”
