It’s time for a new tradition. It’s the time of year for lists and awards. Let’s hand out some awards.
Thread of the Year: The nominees are: 1) Freek Suijver for his Maison Ilan thread. It started as a customer service thread and took on a life of it’s own. The train wreck you couldn’t help but watch. It lives on.
Brian Tuite for his Sonoma thread. Utterly helpful.
Todd French for his Berserkerday thread.
And the winner of the Frenchie (yes, they are the Frenchies) goes to… drum roll… Todd French! Berserkerday is a microcosm of all the great things about participating in this online community. Berserkerday takes it beyond an online community. This thread in particular leads to lots of great deals and people drinking great wine. What could be better? I expect it’s a lot of work for him to put together and it probably rolls on all year. So upon him I bestow this award.
(You know of course that one day you’ll win a trivia contest because you’ll know that the first Frenchie was actually won by it’s namesake.)
Poster of the Year: There are so many people whose posts I enjoy. For me, Jeremy Holmes. He shares my love of Burgundy and is a sharing, terrific and enthusiastic writer.
Thread Title of the Year: As I recall, this was actually out at the end of last year, but Jeremy Bartlett for “Carillon My Wayward Son.” Brilliant.
Lifetime Achievement in Collecting: Francois Audouze. I immensely enjoy vicariously experiencing his pinnacle tastings. That he finds wine so emotional is truly inspirational.
Winemaker of the Year: So many candidates and many of them are fellow posters. I’m sensing a lot of love here for nice guy Mike Smith at Myriad. He is on a roll.
Quote of the Year: I’m looking for your help here. I don’t have anything marked, but I’m sure some of you will have something memorable.
Person you’d like to see start this thread and host next year’s show in December: your nominees please.
Please feel free to come up with some other categories (region of the year, etc.). Let’s get this show started. Who are your winners?
One of my favorite quotes by Travis Scott - who’s an idiotic troll and no longer visits the boards… but he said:
“I simply cannot fathom how someone tasting an assortment of 10 year old Barolo could achieve anything more insightful than an academic sort of protosynaptic pain/pleasure complex based on the relative presence or absence of tannins in the samples.”
The post of the year is Chris Blums “my friend wants to park his RV at barefoot cellars” in response to the “friend wants to land his helicopter at Sgreagle” thread.
I’m disappointed that Drinx’s epic “The 16 bottle Chardonnay Blowout Challenge!” was not a TOTY finalist.
Maybe I just like toilet humor too much, but BG killed it with “Wow … that Ravenswood cork would give your toilet a real run for its money in a beauty contest!”
Plus, who didn’t love the score inflation from the 6th place finisher:
In 6th place: 2002 Black Opal by Wolf Blass: This has a rather nauseating nose of rubber super balls, sweaty crotch, and lemon zest. The palate tastes like plastic army men with some dirtiness thrown in. There’s also a touch of buttered lemons on the palate that make the palate far better than the nose. 78 pts
It got all deleted and then quotes got attached to people other than the authors, I think, but this one was hilarious. I don’t know if it is still available to read (I am a bit challenged with search/technology).
I just read the “16 Chardonnay Blowout” thread. Excellent nomination. I was unaware of it (based upon the dates, I suspect I was up north in the woods deer hunting). Hysterical. I was laughing to tears. No doubt that should be a nominee. Funniest thread of the year for sure.
