Such a propert claret. And quintessential Lanessan.
Unmistakably Cru Bordeaux. Cassis, lead pencil, some dry earthy notes and barn plank. Some wafts of bell pepper as well. The palate is mid-weight, nice structure between the tannins and acids, but starting to soften. A cool climate profile. As good as Bordeaux QPRs get.
Alot of mixed opinions on the 2014 vintage…and to be honest, a vintage I’ve had minimal exposure to. Not sure why, because Alfert was praising its classic appeal from early on. On top of that, an early toe dip into the 2014 D’armailhac was a positive one. So guilty as charged for continuing to overlook this intriguing vintage. To say I’m due, is an understatement
Off to the stash to whip out a bottle of 2014 Beausejour Duffau Lagarrosse
Popped the cork, no decant, a modest splash pour and a few swirls. Hmmmm, not showing much aromatically, a small sip. ok, a bit weak/dilute on the palate, devoid of much fruit, just some tart damson and astringent tannins after some assertive swishing. Kept swirling, sipping and then let it sit for 20min.
Alright, this is improving, but favoring a tertiary evolution. Lovely expresso notes, marsala and afternoon rain.
The damson fruit is there, but very thin/ light, this wine is all earthy action, light beef broth, golden beet root, damp forest floor and saline.
Was this an overly compelling wine? No
Devoid of an significant notes of fruit? Yes
A wine that would garner a high critic score? No
A full body, robust wine? No
A wine that the wine crowd would be remotely interested in?No
Am I happy to have another remaining bottle? Your God damn right I am
that’s about the description I’d use for a Clos de L’oratoire opened last month, but it was solid. I really have enjoyed the vintage on the whole…but must admit my favourite wines have been a Pape Clement Blanc and a La Clarte Haut Brion
