Man, prior vintages of this have been so fun, gulp able, joyous… this one is way off for me, thinner, tarter, a bit sour. Maybe even a mild case of secondary fermentation??? Gone is the juicy but deep simplicity that made this one so appealing at $15 or so. Just me? Or others experiencing the same this year?
I’m not familiar with previous vintages, but I thought this wine was a bit weird both times I tasted it. I didn’t think the 2012 Morgon was what I’ve come to expect from that wine, but that’s a different story. I can’t wait to try the '13 Morgon.
Vintage variation from a minimal intervention winemaker? I am shocked I tell you. Shcoked.
My wife and I just had this in France. If that’s a poor example, it’s difficult to imagine how good the others are.
I don’t know how long the '13’s have been out, but if it’s like ''10 and '11, they tended to really round out after 2-4 months post-release. Decanting helped those guys a bit, but bottle “age” solved a lot of initial spikiness.
2013 was a particularly difficult year in Beaujolais from what I’ve read (haven’t had an opportunity to taste much yet, though). Between that and Lapierre’s hands-off winemaking style I’m not too surprised that this year might be a little off.
Not sure which vintages of this you’ve had previously, but '09, '10, and '11 would almost certainly have been more fruit forward than '13. For a cuvee that trades on fruit and “gulpability”, it could be a tough go in '13.
The 2013 Lapierre Morgon is very good. It’s all rocks and strawberries though, rather than the deeper, darker fruit of some recent vintages. Much more mineral and red fruit.
Too bad to hear about the 2013…having a glass of the 2012 right now and it kicks ass.
I had the exact same reaction to the 2013 - didn’t finish even one glass, and it was no better on day two.
Others will disagree (and already have in this thread), but to me, it’s just not on the level of any other vintage I’ve had. That doesn’t mean it isn’t an enjoyable wine, but there’s a lot of other Beaujolais out there that I’d rather drink, which isn’t usually the case.
2013 Lapierre Morgon is a much better wine than the 2012. '13 is my favorite vintage since Marcel died. Bright and crunchy. Good stuff.
Crush just released '13 Lap Morgon @ $33. Curious to see how the perspective shakes out, as it seems very polarizing on here…
Does anyone posting in this thread realize it’s about the Raisins Gaulois and not the Morgon?? Lol.
Yes. Though I do think there’s a very strong correlation between the two in terms of style on a vintage to vintage basis, so to me asking about one and getting info on the other would still be helpful.

I don’t think anyone in the thread misunderstood, they just used the talk of the “lesser” (though delicious) wine as an intro to discuss the Morgon.
The 2013 Morgon just arrived here. I’ve had the 2013 Raisins and didn’t like it as much as previous vintages.

Yup. I slurped as bunch of the 2012 last December in Maui. Yum!
