2012 Montevertine Pian Del Ciampolo

The wine arrived a couple of days ago. So I was reluctant to open it, normally I will give it a few weeks to settle down. It didn’t seem to care about that and delivered one of the best expressions of Sangiovese that I have had in two years. Made of mostly Sangiovese with small amounts of Canaiolo and colorino it has a light red garnet hue. With enough balance to stand on the point of a needle it is packed with elegant forms of cherry, leather, stones and spice. Imagine one of your favorite actors playing a lesser role perfectly. And there you have it. Only negative is prices have inched up. Still, I would have purchased twice as much if offered. When first tasting the wine the following phrase developed in my mind.

“My God, it’s full of stars.”

Shhhhhhhhhhh! It’s hard enough to get as it is. Also a 2007 was delicious a few nights ago–all of the elements you described plus a nice edge of cured meat to it. Montevertine’s ‘lower tier’ wines always seem to deliver in spades.
