Only ~30 cs made. At around $40/btl list the QPR is certainly debatable, but I’m interested to see what Wells has done with this grape. I picked a few btls up at the pickup party this past weekend, will open one in the next couple weeks (hopefully pairing it with some fresh crab).
In other Copain news, they are getting ready to replant the estate vineyards - there is hardpan under the soil surface that the original vines could never penetrate, so they’ll be breaking that up before putting the new vines in.
I’m a Single Vineyard Club member but don’t seem to get news on releases like this (the 2012 Trousseau is another one i don’t recall hearing anything about). Their website is absent details, so how are we meant to find out?
That is a good question since neither of these got a release email, even to SV club members (although one might be coming on the Picpoul, not sure). I found out about the '12 Trousseau release when I saw it on the Arlequin SF wine club release list and emailed Hollie (who is no longer at Copain btw). The Picpoul has been teased on twitter/FB by both Copain and other folks like Jasmine Hirsch over the last couple months so I’ve been keeping an eye out for it, but I’m not sure I would have found out it was available this past weekend if I hadn’t asked…
Not sure how Copain works. I’ve had problems in the past with accessing their web site and even getting emails to them. Got an email on Saturday (the 2nd) saying my wine would be shipped on the 8th and I was given a FEDEX tracking number. On Monday (the 4th) I got an email from them saying that my wine HAD shipped on the 5th, same tracking number. Used that number twice today and both times FEDEX had no record of it. As others have posted, I was never informed of the Picpoul nor any other wines that have become available.
Curt - I think the email on the 4th was simply a heads-up that your order was being prepped for shipment. Today’s is to provide the tracking number. The email of today states that the tracking number will become active once the package is tendered by the carrier AFTER 6:00 PM Pacific time.
Thanks for the info Dave. I have yet to receive an email from them today mentioning any shipping. My email from the 4th read as if it was sent today but did not mention any time of the day for shipping. The tracking number they provided was the same as the one from Saturday, the difference being that yesterday’s number did not link to FEDEX, while Saturday’s did. Still great wines IMHO!
Just got an email from Copain offering both the Picpoul and the Trousseau. 35 cases of the Picpoul out of 108 produced and 40 of the Trousseau out of 122 produced remain - can get up to 6 bottles of each.
2012 Picpoul Blanc – Inaugural release
Directly translated from French, Picpoul means “lip stinger.” This relatively obscure varietal produces wines with bright acidity and minerality, underpinned by a clean citrus flavor. Our first release of Picpoul is intensely aromatic, with a perfumed nose of fresh herbs, citrus zest and white flowers, followed by a mouthwatering finish. Of the 108 cases produced, only 35 remain.
2012 Trousseau
Our second release of Trousseau pays homage to its heritage, displaying a soft and elegant texture, similar to Pinot Noir. A highly aromatic nose is layered with rich spice, graphite and floral notes. The delicate palate is carried through by vibrant red fruits and a lingering finish. While 122 cases were produced, only 40 remain.
