2011 Shitty CA Pinot Noir Thread

And so it did.

Slow-oxed 5 hours and poured. Nice complex rose petal and stems, spicebox and earth on the nose that keep expanding, 12.4% ABV yet had mouth coating flavors of red fruit, spice, more roses along with guiding acidity without shrillness. A long finish, just about at peak for me. I really like what Horseshoe offers. Pop one if you have several.

A shitty 11 indeed!

Time for some 10 year retrospective tastings…

Awesome - my WOTD for the Kutch tasting. First of all, not only is 2011 underrated as a vintage, it’s my favorite California vintage. An this might be my favorite of 2011, top 5 for sure.

Looking like an older burg in the glass, light brick color. Aromas of cedar emanate from the glass. Very euro in its presence. Red berry fruit, primarily raspberry and light strawberry mid palate through the finish. Cedar hangs around to the end.

Drank my last bottle of that 8 years ago. Oh well.

Recently drank one of my two 2011 Dehlinger Altamont Pinot Noirs from near perfect storage with a neck fill. It was alive and well with vibrant cherry fruit and spice and medium body, it was in great harmony, nothing lacking, nor out of place.
Classically 2011 shitty! Glad I have one more.

Drinking this tonight, and it is exceeding expectations. The wine is still fresh and lively, and the red raspberry and sandstone notes are still quite noticeable. If I had to be critical, I would say that the wine hasn’t evolved much. Then again, since I have always enjoyed this wine I guess that’s not much of a criticism.

Did you ever dust off that 3L?

Still sitting on it. For no reason.

If you come to Socal I’ll open it for you.

@Frank_Murray_III will open up something too! :joy:

IIRC, FMIII always said “en Bas” was his favorite Copain PN.

Anyway, I don’t think you need to be in any hurry to open a 3L of this wine. Here is the Wizard Gandalf, talking to my 750:

En Bas and En Haut are different, each in their own distinct ways. I find En Haut rockier, on the blue side of the fruit spectrum, and En Bas to be more red and fleshier. Probably an oversimplification but I have so many #$^% notes on both, including the 2011, I suppose some AI software could distill a few sentences as to their contrast. I finished all my 2011s back in 2018 so nothing left to taste but my notes seemed to suggest to drink sooner than later.

I’m glad to hear the EB 2011 is doing well. If that is the case, then that 3L that Brig has probably is doing just fine. Brig, maybe you bring that to Jill’s 70th? Just a thought.
