2011 Shitty CA Pinot Noir Thread

Drank a fantastically shity Joseph Swan 11’ Cuvee de Trois pinot the other night. expresive aromatics ,spice ,red fruits ,nice acid.
Obviousely this was so bad ,that i decided to drink the entire bottle rather than allow someone else to suffer thru it as well…lol.

Huh, had to create this wine in CT, falltacular must be the coming out party for this vintage. I’m tasting this on day 2 and it’s beautiful, still acting youthful after 24 hours. Color is dark maroon with very good clarity. Spice box nose from the oak. Dark cherry, cinnamon, good layering, and fine tannins. Long finish.

Deep crimson color, almost opaque. Great nose of dark berries, spice, and dried leaves. I’m guessing there is whole cluster which adds a level of complexity. Oak forward notes with mild red berries, medium plus acid and very strong spicey flavor. Very long finish, 60 seconds easy.

Never heard of this producer, ordered at a wine shop to drink in their bar. Surprised at the depth of color for an '11 and it shows substantial legs which leads me to look at the ABV on the label, 14.5%. More surprises. Nose is red berry and spice. Plate shows a bite from the alcohol and red fruit and strawberry, spice, and cinnamon. Again, surprised by the concentration for an AV '11. Smooth finish. (88 pts.)

The more I drink the 11 Pinot the more I want them , WesMar continues to impress me. Kutch is very nice and Littorai is simply amazing!

Seriously, the good producers made EXCELLENT wine in this vintage. It’s a WBer/AFWE vintage, my favorite.

Rivers Marie Summa (not old vine), this has put on a lot of weight since I tried it just before bottling. Classic Summa orange peel, cranberry, acid, all the good parts of 2011. Maybe these won’t last forever, but this is damn tasty.

I have to fully agree. So many vintages get a rush to judgement. The '11’s I bought we just started drinking and they have gained a lot of weight with some additional bottle time since release. Which is why we release our PN after 21 months in bottle. The usual suspects that you mention from up here made some great wines.

A vintage like '11 forces most into the AFWE space. Now a vintage like '12 or '13 you have to make a choice to be in the AFWE space as mother nature did allow bigger wines if thats the direction you wanted to go.

This is a KJ project and is poured in the same tasting room as Edmeades. There are 4 KJ labels producing some AV wines, Wind Racer, La Crema, and Maggy Hawk. Dark and concentrated is not typical for the vintage up here but there also not the only one that made wines that way thru cellar tweaks in '11.

Joe, I figured there was some “engineering” going on…

2011 Drew Family Cellars Pinot Noir Morning Dew Ranch Vineyard
Nose of forest floor leaves and red berries, palate earth red berries strawberry, hint of tart cherry and spice as the wine opens, medium light body and brilliant acidity. balanced with a long life ahead imo. Love this vineyard. Really shitty…where do I get more.

Sorry to dredge up this old, painful topic but wanted to find a context to float my TN for the RM SC pinot noir.

This vintage of RM SC won’t be for everyone but I can dig it.

Over a year since my last bottle. I enjoyed a glass y/day, now returning to the bottle a day later for this TN. Pours darker in color. The wine exhibits the features of the 2011 vintage that I enjoy, allowing the tarter qualities to emerge, like cranberry mainly. There is some riper tones, maybe in a chunkier red fruit of raspberry and strawberry, along with the cranberry, pine needle and plenty of citrus zest. All together, has the tang and zest of the vintage, but retains the RM qualities of red, jammy fruits. I have one left, will drink in the next few years as I think this vintage of the SC is going to be fine to consume early.

Great note Frank. My '11 SCs are long gone (as are my 12s). I don’t have a good idea as to how well TRB’s pinots age, although I don’t think of them as agers the same way I do, say Rhys, Littorai or Copain Kaisers. My oldest RMs are 09 Summa Old Vines and these still come across as very young and vibrant.

Yes, Mr D, I too don’t hang onto the RM SC bottles for long either. I have a 10 left, but that’s it as far as going backwards. I have an 08 Summa OV so we think alike there, too.

FWIW, I just finished the last few ozs of the 2011. At a room temp of 78, this still tasted like it did when it was cooler, just maybe with a little more fruit when it’s warm, as I’d expect.

Just reading your note makes me recall this wine in ample detail. It was a beauty and I loved seeing all the notes from people calling it thin and acidic (give it to me!). I just had the 2013 a while ago, and man, it was a hot ripe mess. :frowning:

correction - that was a flawed bottle after all. Had another 2013 and it was excellent.

I’ve still got 06 Summa OV, planning to open that once it hits it’s 10th anniversary and will report back on how it held up. [cheers.gif]

I had one of these a couple months back and it came across as somewhat tired. Not bad, just on the downswing.

I’m not sure where the op was going with this. As whole cloth, the 2011 red wines from most of the west coast including Oregon and Washington were less than great for me and I don’t mean not fruit forward but often green and stemmy. This includes many of the Pinots I have tasted though I have plenty of '11 Pinots in my cellar that haven’t been opened. The ones I have tasted have been on wine lists at restaurants or ones brought to tastings by others.

Hello lawrence, lots of inside WB irony going on here.

This is a knockoff thread from the Shitty 2007 thread started by the beloved and now deceased Bob Wood. Search for it, worthy read.

When all the pundits were bagging on the California 2011 vintage, which was brutal for growers and producers, many of us believe that '11 is one of the best CA Pinot vintages.

I’m liking the '11 PN from up north, but then I like that thin shitty stuff. The Cabot '10s were a slightly more fruity than the OR wines, so If the '11s follow suit, they should be quite nice for me.

Viva la Wood!
