“As the scores and specific wine commentaries suggest, Ponsot has clearly outperformed the vintage in 2011.” – Allen Meadows, The Burghound.
A tantalizing, world-class offering of the iconic Ponsot including the uber-rare assortment case and magnums Clos des Monts Luisants “Vignes Centenaire” !
Pricing is tremendous! SOLD OUT immediately here! There’s continuing thirst for wines from Burgundy’s ….
man, is there a major producer who produces worse wines in “not great” vintages like Ponsot? Btw Barry what’s pricing in Netherlands like? In the US you can still get 99/02 CDLR’s from ponsot for a pretty reasonable price.
2011 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes
A discreet application of wood does not reduce the considerable appeal of the ripe, pure and airy nose with its broad m?lange of wild red berry fruit liqueur, earth, spice, violets and a hint of animale. The broad-shouldered flavors possess superb mid-palate concentration that enrobes the buried but still quite firm tannins while culminating in a beautifully balanced, muscular and explosively long finish. This is also very clearly built to age yet like the Clos St. Denis, there is so much sap that this could be drunk now with pleasure. A wow wine.
Barry, I’m sure the 2011 Ponsot CdlR is a good wine. I guess what Charlie and I are saying is that for the price that they are going for here in the States ($570-$600+), you can easily get 1999 ($375) and 2002 ($235 K&L Auction) which are known great vintages and have aged gracefully for the past 10+ years. Again, not trying to say that the 2011 is not going to be a great wine in the future, but with all the talks of possible GM notes similar to 2004, why take the risk and pay more, if I can back-fill on “proven” great wines from 99 and 02 (or any other good vintages in the 90s and 00s).
Ok. I’m not getting onto the 11 dogfight but I do have to disagree with something Charlie said. I think Ponsot does great in lesser vintages. 2000, 01, 03, 06, 07 and 08 have all been great.
I don’t have nearly the sample size of others on this board, but the '08 is one of the best young Burgundies I can remember. It was also nice that you could get it for $180/per. I wish I’d bought more.
Not to mention the superb 86s. These caused horror when delivered and seemed disastrous for many years afterwards but came more than good in the end, glorious wines.
