2011 German Riesling Vintage -- Is It Good or Not?

My buying is limited so I tend to focus on better vintages. I’ve enjoyed '10s and '12s more than '11s overall so I put my money there. But if I see a good price on a wine I like I’ll buy '11, and have had some that were quite good, even with my modest Riesling intake. I liked the Donnhoff wines that I had as well as a couple of Selbachs.

 me to. Maybe you will find a few good GG’s (or Aus-/Spatlese Trocken) from 2003 or 2006. I try to avoid anyway
But still there isa lot of great vintages in this millenium

Tran, for me from 2008 through today, 2011 is the vintage that gives me the most apprehension when I open bottles. I have had great bottles, mediocre bottles and downright awful bottles. Donnhoff, and Schaefer have been great, Lauer has been hit or miss, although I had a very nice bottle the other night, I think it was Kern, Adam have been good with a hiccup or two, Lubentuishof and fricke have given me problems, Stein and Weiser-Kunstler have been good.

BUY BUY BUY

David, it seems that 2012 will outperform my favorite vintage 2004 in the future. The winemaker Philipp Wittmann also from Rheinhessen said to me that 2012 is his best vintage when started winemaking in 2001.

Buy as much as you can from 2012.

Cheers,
Martin

Claus,

we are spoiled with lovely vintages since 2001. You have to look in the 70s, 80s and 90s then you will find real bad vintages.

I am looking forward to the 1985 von Hövel Kabinett. flirtysmile

Thanks, Martin.

I can only get my hands on couple bottles. This wine is so difficult to find in states now. How long should I age it?

David

David,

I had the luck to taste all vintages of G-Max and I have to say they need time. In 2013 I took part on a vertical from 2001-2011 and 2004 was a baby and I got goosebumps from the quality, 100/100. Also 2001 and 2002 showed no weakness.

Don´t touch G-Max the first 10 years!

Best,
Martin

My experience with 2011 is mostly limited to egon muller, jj prum and willi Schaefer - they were all very good on release but have largely shut down at this point in my experience. I’m confident that they’ll come around again with time.

Just had the

Lovely wine. Elegance and precision.
