You don’t have to be big to be beautiful and this is a hauntingly beautiful featherweight. Color is light ruby, little if any bricking (hard to see in a restaurant). The aromas are redolent of red plums, with a whole bouquet of flowers right behind the fruit; violets more than roses. There are earthy touches behind the flowers, as if they were planted in the richest of soils. The palate is light, with almost the weightlessness of the greatest wines. Still there is a dense panoply of flavors unfolding, starting with plums, then with cherries, raspberries and even a hint of strawberry. The fruits are resolutely and beautifully red. The finish is so long you don’t want the next sip. This is a stunner, from a relatively lightweight vintage and a producer known for finesse. It is fully mature; I would not hesitate to hold it for up to five years, but why wait? Rated 96.
This was an incredible bargain for $85 off the list at Il Capriccio in Waltham.
