2010 Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Pure – 99+RP

2010 Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Pure - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (9/6/2013)

A big profound wine of richness and power. With opulent dark black fruit, liquorice and overpowering spices. Intense, mouth filling and long. Lacking finesse and elegance not a style of wine for me!

I bought a bunch of the 03, before they started the specialty cuvees. Too bad they’ve gone over to the dark side.

2010 Domaine la Barroche Chateauneuf-du-Pape “Pure” – 99+ points Robert Parker ;

“this extraordinary tour de force is one of the greatest wines made in the world today.”

The 2006 is a great wine. That’s one to find.

drank mine already
I’m an idiot

In 2011 my wife and I celebrated our anniversary at Spago Maui and they had 2006 Pure on the list for $175, so I bought it expecting that my wife would love it and I would not. It was delicious and the exception that proved my rule about disliking modern CdP and special cuvees.

I’m a fan of 04 too…for some reason I like super cuvees in not so super vintages.

I think a visit to Barroche is in order. Julien Barrot is doing things you don’t see at many estates. He’s not amping up the oak for example.

Pure is 100% grenache. I suspect those looking for an accessible young Pure will be very disappointed. And those bitching about grenache in the ongoing grenache thread should stay away - far away.

Did not buy 10’ Barroche Pure, but I do like the 10’ Barroche CDP (basic cuvee) a lot.

I found a picture of the rather old foudre Julien uses for the Pure Cuvee here:

I do think anyone who think’s Julien “has gone over to the dark side” knows little about his approach.

Far from dark side, but I prefer the redder side of Grenache from cooler years versus the headier, more black fruit laden ripe years…I love CdP in all forms, but prefer the Rayas expression versus the small barrique version of Grenache when I’m choosing…but frankly will drink both. Love 'em all.

Yes, quite liked the '04 and '06, they are quite modern looking though.

Sold all my '07’s, a terrible wine that was also highly rated…
