2010 Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Pure- France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (9/6/2013)
A big profound wine of richness and power. With opulent dark black fruit, liquorice and overpowering spices. Intense, mouth filling and long. Lacking finesse and elegance not a style of wine for me!
In 2011 my wife and I celebrated our anniversary at Spago Maui and they had 2006 Pure on the list for $175, so I bought it expecting that my wife would love it and I would not. It was delicious and the exception that proved my rule about disliking modern CdP and special cuvees.
I think a visit to Barroche is in order. Julien Barrot is doing things you don’t see at many estates. He’s not amping up the oak for example.
Pure is 100% grenache. I suspect those looking for an accessible young Pure will be very disappointed. And those bitching about grenache in the ongoing grenache thread should stay away - far away.
Far from dark side, but I prefer the redder side of Grenache from cooler years versus the headier, more black fruit laden ripe years…I love CdP in all forms, but prefer the Rayas expression versus the small barrique version of Grenache when I’m choosing…but frankly will drink both. Love 'em all.
