2008 BURGUNDY & RHONE tasting in Graz

Well, maybe not the Chateauneuf part… [snort.gif]

Not sure why I didn’t check this thread earlier, perhaps because I have much less of an interest in Rhone than Burgundy. The tasting feels a little schizophrenic to me. But thank you for your detailed notes. It’s very helpful re: 2008 burgs, and gives me a little pause in randomly picking midrange wines.

Granted. The vintage didn´t provide so many great wines (IMHO) that I felt forced to buy 24 different each of Burgundies and Rhones … that´s why I simply combined both regions. Of course you can argue if it is fair to combine some even in the same flights … but I found it “interesting” at least …

Gerhard,

It seems you may be a bit higher on the '08 CdP vintage than am I (at least, that’s the impression I get from reading your notes here). My opinion on the '08 Combe de Fous certainly differs a bit from yours, as I thought it was quite nice and deserving of a score in the 92-94 range. I though the Deux ex Machina was just a hair more impressive – call it 93-94. Conversely, I think the '08 Beau is a “pass” – I seem to recall having that in the 89-91 range, which just isn’t good enough for me given its price point.

A quick thought on the number of replies: there are many reasons for the number of replies any thread gets (or doesn’t get). For example, I have (quite uncharacteristically) been largely off the board the past couple weeks, and have not seen your post until now. Consider taking this approach: every time you post a thread, assume that you will get ZERO replies; if, in making that assumption, you feel that making such a post would be a “waste of your time” or “not worth it” then simply don’t post at all – that way, you spare yourself the waste of your time and the apparent grief that such a situation causes you, and you likewise spare the rest of us your complaining about it – it’s quite unsavory, really … I’m just being honest with you here. That said, I enjoy your posts, and hope you continue to find them worthy of your time, regardless of how many responses they may (or may not) elicit.

I probably read 95% of what you post on this board. Sorry I don’t have more to say but I value your contributions greatly. Keep it up.

Thanks Gerhard,
Nice line-up.
Best Regards
Jeremy

Brian,
I think I was quite critical on the 08 CdPs … but on the other hand I´ve only selected what I´ve tasted before - and liked. Combe des Fous was IMHO simply slightly “overdone” for me … (not tasted Deus …), but if you like the slight woodyness and heavy extract I can understand the higher rating …

My

seems to be not THAT different from you … and reg. the price I absolutely agree … (and I actually passed)

I certainly will observe your recommendation … [wink.gif]

I thought you were probably taking a narrow selection of the '08 CdPs here - I just wasn’t sure. As for the Combe and the Deus – I doubt you would enjoy the Deux any more than the Combe, as the Deux is a bit more extracted and heavier than the Combe. In regards to another comment of yours, above, to another poster: the Combe is 16.2% alc., so far in excess of the stated 14.5%. The Deus '08 is 16.3%.

… A Beaucastel 2008 tasted two weeks ago would be app. on the same level (90-91 p and well balanced).

I was misled by your statement to Faryan that '08 for Beaucastel was an “excellent” vintage. I suppose 90-91 is, technically, “excellent,” but I simply don’t think 90-91 is excellent by Beaucastel’s standards.

That´s exactly what I though … so I choose the Combe and left the Deus out.
To be clear: I usually love and loved both cuvées, especially 2004, 05, 06, but also 2003 … only 07 was simply too much for me … although I love the vintage in general. I think in 2008 it was wise not exctracting too much … it is not a vintage to produce monster-wines … the ripeness simply wasn´t perfect - and I liked those wines best that showed fine balance besides good concentration (e.g. Charvin is a masterpiece of balance).
