Thanks for the P-L note - just read a lot about the estate in Noble Rot.

Thanks for the P-L note - just read a lot about the estate in Noble Rot.
I tasted about 100 2007s. The Lagrange was one of the best(Subtly fruity nose, touch of black spice, cigarbox, sweet wood, caramelly ’ lean and fresh in the mouth, soft tannins, nice bright acids, lightweight and fresh, lovely purity to the fruit, great integrated baking spice accents, real length to the fruit and spice notes) I did not like the Phelan Segur (Herbaceous and vegetal on the nose with an underlying woody sweetness ’ indistinct in the mouth with nice richness but not much focus, acid is acceptable, tannins really build up, sort of just lays across the palate).
There were plenty of wines with green notes - which I don’t dislike out of hand, but more disturbing were some unripe tannins, and the excessive use of oak, and a few that were just extracted to hell.
When they got it right, producers seemed to make some pretty, red fruited, bright, medium bodied wines.
Or conversely you might think they were thin, acidic, and under-ripe.
But then again I like 1999 Bordeaux so your mileage may vary.
I thought that some of them were better than their counterparts from so-called “great” vintages. If you like balance, freshness, and complexity that includes a bit of herbaceous, then some of these are probably worth trying.
I received an email today from a well known retailer for 2007 Mouton Rothschild and 2007 Haut Brion for $309 each arrival early 2011. The discounting has started. I think prices can only drop further.
Is anyone here buying 07 First Growths?
Interesting on the Phelan Segur - I’ll have to try another bottle soon.
Did you have the Gloria? Any others that stood out as worth a buy?
When they get under $45 I’ll take a look see.
Didn’t try the Gloria. This were all tasted at a big tasting, over the course of 7 hours so I only spent a few minutes with each wine, returning to double check a few. Having said that I think I got a good idea regarding the vintage as a whole, though some wines may have been caught at an awkward moment.
My top wines were
Château Gruaud-Larose
Chateau Rauzan Segla
Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
The best of the rest included the following, some of which I would buy, other were very good but not for me.
Château Dassault Saint-Emilion
Château Balestard la Tonnelle Saint-Emilion
Château la Louvière
Château Saint-Pierre
Château Figeac
Château Maucaillou
Pape Clement
Pichon Longueville Baron
Haut Bailly
Chateau Branaire Duluc-Ducru
Leoville Barton
Chateau d’Armailhac
Château Lagrange
Chateau Haut Bages Liberal
