This is a satisfying mid-$20s bottle of Riesling. Light straw in the glass, lime and a little petrol on the nose. In the mouth there was a touch of spritz initially that quickly disappeared. The wine offers lots of honeyed apple and a little tropical fruit element, some slate and petrol, and a medium finish. It does not say “Kabinett” to me, however, as it is much sweeter than I what I associate with that designation, and the label states that the abv is only 7.5%. I also think it could use a little more acidic zip. It sure is tasty, though.
Hey Brad,
I tasted the 2005 recently with almost exactly the same impressions… good stuff. Could almost believe it was a spatlese. My note:
-
2005 Schäfer-Fröhlich Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Nahe (8/19/2009)
Tiny hint of slate/petrol developing on the nose, lovely. Palate is also nice, good acid but also sweetish finish for a kab. Delicious. (91 pts.)

I would definitely have thought it was a Spatlese if I had tasted it blind, but it was delicious as you say. I have been impressed with wines from this producer lately and definitely will seek more of its wines. Sounds like the 2005 is worth a look.
