2006 Failla Syrah Sonoma Coast Estate

2006 Failla Syrah Sonoma Coast Estate

Popped, poured & tasted over 3+ hours.

Color is a very deep saturated ruby w/hint of purple.

Nose > Big, smoky, mulberry, blackberry, black-raspberry, aromatic wild black & red-cherry.
Beautiful new French oak perfume. Sweetly smoky & complex.
Violet, licorice, carraway-seed, black-cherry concentrate.
Fat, rich, complex. Creosote, beef-blood, saddle-leather, sassafras & dark-chocolate.

Palate > Big, rich, fruity & spicy. Intense, concentrated fruit.
Black-mulberry, black-raspberry, smoky saddle-leather, black wild-cherry/cherry-bark/cherry-stone.
Very black & wild fruit.
Rich tannic grip, but firm, ripe, young fruit dominates. Sappy & rich right through the finish.
Great acidity & balance. Carries its 14.8% (labeled) ABV blithely, with forceful grace, class & power.
Still some spicy, slightly peppery/chalky tannins to lose, but drinks beautifully now.

This is very much what I’m looking for in Cali Syrah. [highfive.gif]

Yup, Rob. Had this about a month ago. Much the same take on this. Ehren’s Estate Syrah is one of the
great ones from Calif.
Tom

Have not tried the 2006, but loved the 2007. One of only a handful of Cali syrah producers this PN guy buys.

Hey Joe - Keen to throw out a few guesses . . .

Wind Gap?

Pax?

Donelan?

Agharta?

Ramey?

Peay?

Arnot-Roberts?

Carlisle?

Any of the Central Coast Syrahs . . . ?

Great to see this note. I had in my mind they were on the greener/high acid side. I’m gonna pick one up.

Thanks Tom,

Gunna look for more of his wines.

Do Love Cali Syrah (mostly Sonoma, Sonoma Coast, a few Central coast), but the great noses don’t always follow through on the palate, especially on the intensity front.

This one sure does.

Cheers!

Tim,

A big wine, for sure, but tons of violet, leather, licorice & very focused, sappy wild red, black, & blue fruit throughout.

Decent acidity, & not one green note.

Not that you’d think it a wimpy wine, but it hides its 14.8% ABV (labeled) very well.

Cheers to the Killer Cali Syrah!
