2006 Domain Taupenot-Merme (MSD & La Riotte)

2006 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Morey St. Denis - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis (6/24/2009)
Had next to the La Riotte over 2 days.
The Village is lighter. More strawberry and red fruits. Sweet fruit aromas. Nice easy drinking texture. Light cherry, cranberry and lemon on the palate. Med/high acid. Tannins wrap everything up nicely. Not shy on the fruit. On the second the aromatics seemed darker, showing some purple fruit. I really love how clean and pure this wine is. Easy drinking but decent tannic structure that gives it a serious side. Although the tannins seemed much softer on the second day. (89 pts.)

2006 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Morey St. Denis 1er Cru La Riotte - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru (6/24/2009)
Had next to the MSD Village
Aromatically has a more charred quality. A bit of elegance but aromatically this is more stinky and earth focused. Really enjoying the purple fruits mixed with flowers. Darker and more brutish than the Village but still elegant and fairly easy drinking. The acids are more pronounced. A lot going on with this wine but it needs a few years of sleep. (91 pts.)

What did you think of the comparison that Scott Paul wanted made? I guess by the points you gave, you agree that the 1er Cru means 1er Cru. Have you done any of the other `pairings’ from that shipment? That would be a nice lunch… 2 pairings…

Yeah, the La Riotte certainly had more to it. I think this the first red I have drank from the Scott Paul club, other than what I tasted at the winery. It was fun as I rarely do this kind of comparison with Burgs. Not sure why as I seem to do it a fair amount with Cali and Oregon stuff.

LMK when you want to do lunch.
