2006 Copain "Les Copains", James Berry Vineyard, Paso Robles

Add Wells Gutherie to my list of admired winemakers. (Mike Officer, Fred Scherrer, Tom Dehlinger, newcomers like Bradley Browne and Dave Corey and a few others). These are the guys who make consistently great wine, offer exceptional service and sell at fair prices. These area the “keepers.”

The wine (from the great James Berry Vineyard): 15% alcohol. The label does not list varietal composition, but this tastes like a S Rhone blend to me (possibly heavier on the syrah).

Medium dark ruby. Aromas of red fruit and forrrest floor. Black cherries on the initial palate, followed by a little smoke, black pepper and an herbal element. Intense without being heavy, balanced and pure. Lingering aftertaste.

Over several years now I’ve been consistently impressed with Copain. Wells’ offerings impress in large and small ways and don’t disappoint. Worthy of a Berserker. [berserker.gif]

Thanks for the note.

FYI I think this wine is always 50/50 Grenache and Mourvedre.

I really liked this wine but thought it was at its best right at opening. I’ll be drinking another soon … and probably stashing my last bottle for 7-10 years to see what happens.

Agree with you comments about Wells. Great stuff and I think he is improving each vintage.
