2005 Weingut Johannishof (H.H. Eser) Johannisberger Klaus Riesling Spätlese

Lovely texture, with lovely lime and blue fruits and a high toned floral thing on the palate plus really great acidity from a vintage that people lament about the acidity more often than not. For this acid head the acidity was perfect. Already showing some complexity but these wines are known for aging for a bit so hold on. I still have three bottles of the 2001 I will hang onto for another 10-15 years. This is not a monumental spatlese but a merely very good one and worth checking out.

I’ve been a longtime fan of Johannishof wines, but had never visited until the week before last – it surprised even me. This is traditional, uncompromising winemaking, the Rheingau equivalent of Clape and Verset at Cornas. Don’t pass the wines up if you come across them.
