I’ve had Bourgogne Cuvee de Pressonnier, Joseph Roty and Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits, Michel Gros in the past couple of months. The last glass was the best one after the wines had been opened for several hours. I’ll pop another of each in a year or so.
I still have a bottle of Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits, Gros Freres in the drinking queue.
All of these were Premier Cru markdowns, priced in the mid-teens.
I completely agree with your first paragraph. As regards the second I’d substitute’have recovered’ for ‘are recovering’ and then it would make sense to someone who may have last tried the wine in question two years ago, for example.
Over the last few weeks have consumed…
05 JC Boisset Santenay Clos Rousseau 1er - starting to shed its tannins, rich and quite superb already.
05 Daniel Rion Vosne-Romanee - this was a surprise, has softened markedly, now showing some secondary nuance, almost ready to go.
On reflection, the last year or so has seen some significant positive evolution at this level.
They will still improve but I have enjoyed Roty pressoniers, Potel Beaune 1er vignes franches and Grivot Nuits Charmois but Grivot bourgogne not approchable,… Generally trying to drink other years…
Very lazy to write…so I borrow Lew’s message and would like to add the followings :
I bought approx. 50 cases ( of 12 - most of them in promotion sales - 10% off - by SAQ ) of the lowly red Burg from vintage 2005…for daily drinking.
Most of them are Faiveley Mercurey including : CdMyglands, La Framboisere; Les Mauvarennes ( 99 bs ) and CdBeaune. I also bought CdBeane - Jadot and also CdBeaune Bouchard, Chateau de Chamirey - Mercurey ( 71 bs ) and many prodocuers’ Santenays. Plus many Pern-Verg village and 1ieme.
My best buy ( for me ) is 61 bs of : C. Audoin - Marsannay - La Charme aux Prêtres 05.
Bourghound only started to review Charles Audion’s Marsannay ( please note there is no 1ieme in Marsannay ) since vintage 2007. For vintage 2009…he placed nearly all his Marsannay in the Top-Valuve Column ( all rated 90-92 or 90-93 point )…and said in his Review that they are screaming bargain. He said Audoin’s Marsannay - La Charme aux Pretres 09 is not for everyone as it was 100% whole clusters and there are only 600 bs made each years.
I have been buying R-Trapet Chambert and his G-Chambertin for the last few years as his Chambertin is the only Chambertin or CdBese which are under CSD $200 in Quebec. The 05 village is defintely closed down now and also the 06. I would not open another until they are at age 8 or age 10 for 2005.
Okay, i’ll be contrarian. I’ve enjoyed the 2005’s I’ve had recently, and not just from a science experiment perspective. There’s a concentration in them, not seen in any vintage since, that is really enjoyable. Are they still mostly primary? Sure. Are they closed to the point of displeasure? Not in my book. Maybe I’ve just been lucky. Two recent examples were Guyon Chamolle Musigny Clos du Village Domaine du Village and Jayer-Gilles Cotes de Nuits Villages. Both punched well above their weight class.
I ripped through all my Lafarge '05 Bourgogne and Passetoutgrains within about 18 months of receiving it. Drank great. 375s of Comte Armand Volnay likewise saw a similar fate (and that wine was really, really good). Other bottlings that I usually have liked have not shown superbly (M-G Bourgogne, Arlot Clos de Chapeau for instance). I don’t have anything else that I am planning on breaking out for awhile at this point.
Okay, this thread has piqued my interest a bit. Here are some less expensive 2005 leftovers from two local shops. Anyone spot any strong buy recommendations in here, or can my credit card breathe a sigh of relief that I missed most of the 05 village Burg buying frenzy?

Chris, in the SoCal hotbed of Burgundy retailing, I think you can do a lot better if you will talk to a few Burg oriented retailers about what you are trying to do.
The wine counsellors at Signature did not like the wine when it was released. I got one b at full price and tried it. Admittedly the wine tasted very rustic on first day …but round-off the next day. Thanks for tips from Burghound for his TNs on the 2009 version. I took 60 bs at 10% off. In a way…the other wines from C. Audoin tasted more round and smother…and they are only at CAD $35 per.
As of last evening, SAQ web showed there were still 61 bs left. Doubtful it will be there long as SAQ will do 10% promotion sale on 16-17 of April.
