2004 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac

2004 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac

I’ve consumed over 1.5 cases of this over the past 2 years from various sources. It’s about 80-20 : hit-miss ratio. Don’t know if the misses are due to bottle variation/corked/source issue. I’m currently consuming a case imported by Liquidlink (OWC) which also has that 80-20 hit miss ratio. Luckily, tonight’s bottle was a hit. It has lots of sweet dark fruit, some meat and olive aromas going, a little mocha, and that delicious Pauillac graphite quality. A bit like the 2004 Pichon Baron but more fruit forward and a little less complexity and secondary aromas. I put one away in a dark corner hoping to forget about it, but it doesn’t look good for the remaining 3 bottles. I doubt they will make their 10th birthday.

Thanks for the note. I was thinking of waiting until their 10th birthday before opening the first of my stash, but I may need to reevaluate and crack one sooner.

Don’t think there’s a hurry, but certainly enjoyable now if you decide to open one.

Are the misses closed, advanced (poor storage) or just unknown? I’ve had one bottle and it was super tight, with tons of tannins and little fruit. I’ve held off opening another given that experience. Just curious.

Not entirely sure. Not much fruit or much of anything but tannins.
