2004 Leroy Bourgogne - medium garnet, funky nose of spice and red fruits, mouth feel somewhat coarse and dominated by red fruits. Tannic. No vegetal tones. Young and medium-full body. Pleasant finish.
2000 Maume Mazis-Chamberin - medium to light garnet, beautiful subdued floral and cherry nose, soft and balanced and integrated. Mature. Long finish. Very nice. Only one left and I should drink in in the next couple years.
Lots of negatives about the '04 Leroys of course. I bought a case each of the NSG, Vosne Romanee and the Bourgogne and have only had bottles of the NSG (1) and the Bourgogne (2). It happened that my neighbor/ friend bought the same amount and brought that bottle to the table. I’ve had several of his bottles of this vintage. We’ve never had a bad bottle from the lot. The NSG I had 2 years ago was quite good. This Bourgogne was good but not outstanding. I do think it will age and improve.
The 2000 vintage is unusual. A 2000 Dujac Clos St Denis in magnum drunk with a duck course at a restaurant in Beaune was truly wonderful. This Maume was very good.
