2003 Seasmoke Southing

Valentines dinner - rack of lamb with fond de viande, over fried potatoes, sauteed green bean with caramelized challotes.

The last 03’ and a fitting occasion for V-day dinner:

Medium dark red color. Muted nose of spice and cherries. Entry is more smokey cherry, spicy, dirt. This is not intense but rather elegant. Chunky mid-palate with more layers of fruit. 15 second finish with a bit of alcohol peeking through. Overall the acidity and tannins profide a good frame for food.

Good bottle pinot but not sure if we caught it asleep or on the declinr. I actually think that in 03’ showed better 3 years ago than it did today.

I wonder how the 04s are tasting. The 03 was only the 4th or 5th leaf according to Chris. Southing may take a bit more time!?!? At age 7 it should be comming into its own.

Interesting, Dan. I was under the presumption that '03 Southing should be right in a perfect drinking window now. The '05’s are just starting to come around, and those in the know regarding SeaSmoke (like Poppy) have recommended waiting about 5-7 years after vintage date for the Southing…wonder what’s up with this one.
