2002 Lynch Bages: another pleasant surprise

We were on the way out to dinner, and I snagged this. I do not own very many 2002s, and I have generally been unimpressed by the few I have had.

But this was gorgeous. Immediately on opening, I felt as though I was in a cloud of blackberry mist. As the wine developed, the scent became more complex but no less outgoing. To taste, the wine was deep and dark and enveloping. Just a beautiful wine that vastly exceeded my expectations.

Shame, then, that when I returned home and looked to see what bottles could be bought for, I saw that even this rather forgotten vintage of Lynch is going to triple digits pretty much everywhere. Bought for $33 on futures. Sigh.

The 2002 Latour is also fabulous.

2002 left bank was a complete critic fumble

2002 Leoville Barton is a lovely wine. I really enjoy a number of the left bank wines.

2002 alter ego was gorgeous

Some nicely classic wines made in the left bank this year.

David, I actually have a couple of these, but figured of all of the 2002s I own this would be the last to emerge. Is it drinking now?

Yeah, I did a double take the other day when I saw that CT was valuing the '01 @ $112?

I think as a generalisation 2002 Left Bank Bordeaux is much underrated. I recently had an excellent 2002 Margaux, drinking well now: https://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=1329&searchId=298253D6%23selected%253DW1329_22_K30656b8b33c94f3c69f840669ddf74ea
