2001 Wendouree Shiraz Malbec

This is an absolute cracker of a wine. In general terms the Shiraz Malbec has probably been my least favourite wine in the Wendouree range. Well this bottle has turned that idea on its head.

Vibrant dark red, no signs of ageing. Nose has typical Wendouree elements of iron earth, mint and dark red plum fruits. But it is the palate is where things really take off. The old vine shiraz gives power and structure and the Malbec a bright intense juiciness. More rust / iron / earth notes come in late on the palate The tannins are still quite noticeable but are very fine grained and supportive. Acidity is good. The finish is long and intense. The overall effect is a great mouthfeel which is deep dark and powerful without any sense of over ripeness. A very fine bottle indeed. Of course 2001 was an excellent South Aust vintage so that helps too.

This will age effortlessly fore another 20 years (cork gods permitting) but it is so drinkable right now

I noticed that one of my wife’s paintings manage to photo bomb the shot!
