2 Quick Notes from Dinner: 2007 RM Chard, 2004 Lewelling Wight

To celebrate our second year of not killing each other, we went to dinner at Solage in Calistoga.

2007 Rivers Marie Theriot Vineyard Chardonnay – I was fortunate enough to try this out of barrel, so I knew better. I should have wish listed a case. Out of the gate, a little warm (threw into ice immediately) had a fuller body/less acid than I remembered. Terrific balance, length and just a pleasure to drink. Never fat, good fruit, structure - an absolute perfect start to the evening.

2004 Lewelling Wight Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon - Dave Wight has been nice enough to open these for me in the past, this was the first of mine to be sacrificed. Very dense, very ripe, very Parker. Unlike what I am used to from Lewelling. It showed some heat, then it didn’t – the wine was all over the place. Dave isn’t a huge fan of aging his wine, but I would absolutely hold these and hope they sort themselves out. At this stage, I’d much rather have a regular Lewelling from 04 (fantastic!) than the Wight.

Good note on the RM. I opened this on Saturday with a friend, and we both flipped. Dead on with the wish list comment. headbang

Too bad about the Wight 04. The only wine gift my wife ever gave me. I hope it comes together.
