I’ve been on such a roll with stumbling into gems from the central/southern italian regions, so I knew eventually I’d run into a few duds. Went 1 for 3 over the last two days on these. A .333 batting average ain’t too bad! All three of these wines were in the $15 price range

2007 Quintale IGT - Italy, Campania (2/7/2010)
Very ripe with plum and almost raisin-like flavors with some fig notes. More of a low acid, plush ripe wine that just doesn’t quite get there for the hedonism factor. The sweetness factor is a bit over the top for me and lingers on the finish. (85 pts.)

2006 Torre Quarto Negroamaro Sangue Blu Puglia IGT - Italy, Puglia, Puglia IGT (2/7/2010)
Super ripe with an over the top sugary, confectionary sweetness factor. There are some fuller, dark fruits but they are hidden in a death match with a bitter note that seems to dominate at times and nails you on the finish. Not my cup of tea. (83 pts.)

2007 Fattoria Sorbaiano Montescudaio Rosso - Italy, Tuscany, Montescudaio (2/7/2010)
Another value gem from Italy. This is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Motepulciano. Delivers on what I like about each. The sangiovese brings the bright cherry and red fruit flavors with some earthy notes on the nose. The Montepulciano adds some depth and darker fruits and some weight and texture. Nicely balanced and another one that won’t wow you with anything specific, but is just a joy to drink. Easy to finish a bottle of this without blinking…and the alcohol is in the 13.5% range to boot.
