I’ve been off the boards for a long time (too long)… family health matters, a wine business that’s been growing ridiculously fast from age 30 - 32, and recovery from ankle surgery… but at least I got back to Mt. Katahdin for a while last month.
I’ve been drinking way too much of my own wines, but am replenishing the cellar with a fair amount of OPW. The new purchases are trickling in, but his note is on a grower I represented briefly a long time ago, so no qualms about posting.
Medium transparent crimson. Ripe reticent spicy nose with mostly red and some black cherries, along with a surprising hint of black pepper. The palate is both ripe and taut, definitely secondary with some faint touches of sous-bois and a lot of intricacy in both flavor and especially texture. This is an excellent Village at full maturity… the acid will probably become more (too) pronounced with further age. The finish lasts almost half a minute and is clean, balanced and harmonious. A real treat on my first night home after a whirlwind trip to my vineyard in Roussillon (not many transparent reds in Roussillon ). Rated 89.6.
