We talked about a syrah tasting? I don’t remember that, but sure I’m in.
Daniel Posner:Lots of tasting notes over the last 10 days on older Aussies, besides Robert Parker and Jay Miller, anyone taste anything good?
No…I’ve been running an experiment this year - 96,99 Command 97,98,00,01 Dead Arm 97,98 E&E Black Pepper and it has convinced me to never take these guys past 5 years. Not that I’m a big Shiraz drinker…but I do enjoy a fruit bomb from time to time. These seem like they lost their baby fat and turned into flat syrup.
Have had '98 Command and '98 Black Pepper in the last two months…both were stunning wines that weren’t syrupy at all.
D. Walker:I had a bottle years ago and thought it was disgusting – more like cough syrup when I tasted it. Intense eucalyptus, I thought. Anyway, sounds like it hasn’t gotten much better. Thanks for the update!
Funny, Phil Franks loves the stuff.
Not true, I have several but have never opened them. It doesn’t sound like I want to.

You almost bought more a couple of weeks ago.

The 96 Command the 98 E&E have been the best of the lot for me…but I also can’t guarantee provenance on any of them since I bought them on the secondary market. Could have been prematurely aged…although they didn’t seem damaged.
I got the Command on release from Costco and the Black Pepper came directly from Oz via a broker in San Francisco. Every one of the BPs that I have had over the past few years have been very good to incredible. Maybe provenance played a factor in that one.
