1996 Drappier Carte D'or from Garagist--bad lot?

Everything so far smells/tastes oxidized. Is this their style or damaged bottles?

I’m not asking for a refund, but I don’t want to give as presents damaged bottles.

Thanks,
Otto

I’ve had a couple of bottles. One was undrinkable and the other was OK, but definitely over the hill. I never bothered to ask for my money back. I’m just done buying from Garagiste.

I tried 2 bottles of this wine and it is bad. Any other simiar notes? The wine was sold about 2 years ao.

Otto

I saw a post on the Squires board saying the same thing IIRC.

Otto…what is the issue with the wine? Just bad as in you don’t like it? Or bad as in cooked? Or bad as in corked? Or bad as in Oxidized…?

Michael, to me it smells like furniture polish or sherry, so I would say oxidized.

Otto

I’ve had two bottles - One was undrinkable (completely oxidized) and the other was barely drinkable (somewhat oxidized). I never bothered to contact Garagiste about it.

Exactly the same situation here Poppy, have one more, it will go up for auction! [diablo.gif]

Otto

Not with my auction house it won’t!

Why would you do something like this when you feel that its a bad bottle? Talk to Gragist and have them take it back. If they are a half decent retailer they should take it back or give you a credit of sorts. Especially with other bottles/people having the same issue.

Michael, I was just kidding, ribbing Poppy. And it’s not worth my time to deal with Garagiste, not for 3 bottles.

Otto

I did buy it–have to find and try it now . . .

Otto,

Sucks about the wine. I continue to find Champagne to constantly be mishandled here in the US and Drappier is likely prone to being more easily damaged due to their low use of Sulfur across all of their wines. Oddly enough, the last wine I ran into that was across the board damaged was the 2002 Drappier Grand Sendree Rose. This is a great wine, but when tasting it with the importer a month or so ago, we found every bottle they brought with them to be damaged. Not so much as to ruin the wine, but enough for anyone who had tasted the wine before to know that it wasn’t right.

Brad, thanks for the info.

but doesn’t Garagiste have perfect provenance? Their offers usually detail that . . .

It has to be a bad lot. Drappier Carte D’or is consistently an excellent performer IMHO. 1996 was a strong year, so it can’t be dead yet. Sounds like Garagiste got it on a fire sale (literally).
