through the generosity of Greg Meyer a few of us got to taste this glorious wine Saturday night.
a color with some rim variation already and was like a chimera compared with the uniformity displayed by the previously enjoyed domestic PN’s: 2002 JRochioli Little Hill and 2006 Auteur, both of which were excellent. nose was tea with orange rind, fruit with exotic spice - this you can not find domestically. i found the mouthfeel superb and the taste layered with red cherries and some darker fruit discernible, finish lengthy and full of spice. Les Beaumonts, or Les Beaux Monts, usually produces a structured and elegant expression of Vosne Romanee - think pinpoint. there are many more distinctive producers who source from this vineyard including Leroy; and i wonder what a good vintage Leroy from this Premier Cru vineyard would be like???
I picked up some of this wine from PC for a bargain $39.99 back in October 08.
I was also amazed on how good it was.
my bottles were labeled D Laurent Vosne Romanee Aux Beaumonts Vieilles Vignes
I’ve had the '96 once (and have another bottle in the cellar) and I enjoyed it immensely:
1996 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts- France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru (9/22/2007) Kitchen Tasting Group Does Beaver Creek – Day Two: How do you follow a pair of La Tache? 1996 Leroy isn’t a bad choice. This proved to be delicious. The nose offered an intense melange of red fruit, spice, earth, and an appealing funk that disipated somewhat with time in the glass. Really nice. I found this to be delicious stuff. Probably showing a bit more structure than fruit (typical for 1996s I’ve had), but delivering enough fruit to capture your attention fully. Balanced. Tannic. Great long finish. I enjoyed this fully, and even tasted it side-by-side with a small pour of the 1991 Leroy Beaux Mont later in the night. The 1996 had the edge, but both were exceptional.
+1! I think it’s the most efficient way of organizing our shindigs.
BC is working on something in Fresno for one of the Fresno State games, but there’s nothing else on the calendar. We need plan a few football nights now that the season is about to start!
Lauen and I want to have everyone over for a pizza night once it cools down a bit - our place is too small to hold the whole crew with a hot oven in the summer. We’re working on the backyard so we can have some overflow space… I’ll start looking at the calendar - maybe late Sept/early Oct.
Glad you enjoyed the Les Beaumonts. Purchased in approximately 1999. It was good, and I wish I had more!!! It was a very cool night, and Kudos to Edson and Faust for the OUTSTANDING meal that accompanied the wines.
Brian, I think you’re a figment of my imagination in that despite multiple dinners and OL’s, I’ve never met you. Let’s break that habit!!!
That was a very fun night. I might be a little scarce in the next 6-8 weeks, but would love to see all for another dinner and/or Bulldog game…
I thoroughly enjoy the Dominique Laurent style. Very unique wines. At some point in the last year, I bought the 04 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes VV Serie Rare. Since it also came up in this thread, can anyone shed any light on the Serie Rare designation?
I don’t know what Laurent’s present usage for this term is, and it is just a marketing tool. I recall that for the 1996 releases, Laurent produced some cases (I know Vosne Romanee and perhaps others) that were comprised of a bottle from a number of 1er cru vineyards. I think the story was that Laurent had only one barrel of each of these wines.
