1990 Raffault "Les Picasses"

At the risk of stirring up hornet’s nest …

Where does this producer fall on the Brett scale?

Both for current and older vintages … TIA

I gave a dinner party a few days ago at which we had this, the 1990 Montrose and the 1996 Francesco Rinaldi Barolo. All of the wine showed well. Almost everyone thought the Raffault Picasses was the wine of the evening.

Yes.

Relative steal at the price for what this wine still sells.

There has been some moist earth funk (a positive in my book) but no bandaid or horse poop.
Was it Brett? Maybe. Was it excessive? Probably only to the most funk-averse.
If Brett, might it have gone out of control with poor storage? Sure. The bottles I got were obviously well-stored.

FWIW in the two cases of vintages from ‘79-‘90 that I’ve consumed I’ve yet to detect brett.

Right on. Have this and an '89 Couly Dutheil Clos de l’Echo I’ve been meaning to taste side by side.

Popped another bottle of the '14 tonight. Young, somewhat tannic, but approachable from the get-go, with a wonderful smoky quality and good fruit for a cool climate cab franc. What a value!

The 2014 drinks great young. Very glad to have a bunch of it stashed.

I’m not sure it’s destined for the ages, but for the next five or ten years, it will give a lot of pleasure.
