rain and cold weather led me to this bottle during all-day hoops yesterday. definitely on its decline with oxidation changes noted, particularly in the wine’s nose, i still thought this wine got interesting as the best of it was appreciated 5-6 hours after being opened when accompanied by a red sauce pasta filled with fried sirloin & bacon. the wine’s stewed aspect really faded, almost disappeared, and more fruit arose with this food. this pairing was vastly superior to the grilled petit filet i had with this wine for lunch. cheap enough on the secondary market to make this day where i went 8-8 getting into The Sweet 16 more memorable.
Glenn, I am a big fan of these wines and have had the 89 a few times including fairly recently. I think it is just shut down now. The 79 is showing brilliantly right now.
Over the past two years, I’ve had two bottles of the 1975 that i thought were great. Yes, a little on the decline, but nonetheless enjoyable wines!
“Stewed” tells me that bottle was possibly heat damaged…
i have two more bottles so we’ll give another a go in 5 years or so. i also considered heat damage as it is always possibly these weren’t well kept until now.
