1989 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
Initially I was a bit disappointed. A bit funky to start with sweet smooth fruit and integrated tannins but that was it. 30 minute later, the cedar, spice, and subtle mushroom and leather components came out. I think I’m more of a Pichon Baron kinda guy but there is no arguing the elegance, precision, and purity of this wine. 2 hours later, some very pretty floral scents came out and oddly enough seemed to tighten up a bit and become more youthful. Currently my WOTY so far. Nice Sunday dinner with a roasted lamb neck with garlic and thyme.
Had this wine twice from my cellar in the last 2 years. First bottle-beautiful fruit on the palate and lovely floral nose. Second bottle very different and less enjoyable. Mineral and lead pencil on both. I like fruit in my Cabs/Bordeaux blends, but maybe that’s just me. First bottle not complex, just delicious.
Tasted the 89 and 90 Baron and Lalandes together at wine dinner a little over a year ago. All four were beautiful, but if I remember correctly the 89 Pichon Baron was the best of the bunch.
