1989 Maximin Grunhaus Abtsberg Riesling Spatlese Trocken

The color was medium gold, looked less than half its age. The aromas were both surprisingly faint and surprisingly fresh. No ‘firne’, no petrol notes, faintly flowery with hints of macintosh apple and bosc pear. The palate was a puzzle; one taster said ‘buttery and zingy’. I didn’t get much of either, but the wine had some serious weight and very good balance. It lacked the intensity it probably had 10 - 20 years ago, but was still an excellent accompaniment to a mild curried chicken loaded with vegetables. Rated 88.5, wish I had gotten around to this a decade ago, but still a pleasure.
