On my own tonite, simple Ragu Bolognese dressing some good taglietelle. Thought about Ken’s 89 Vietti Rocche, and also a recently acquired 87 Giacosa Villero. Finally decided on this, a wine I had a few weeks ago and wanted to revisit. Very glad I did. On opening, an initial blast of nebbiolo fruit on the nose announcing a well preserved, even youthful example. Consumed over the course of several hours–finishing up as I write–the wine never lost its “edge”, which for me is a very good thing. Not as rich, nor large, as the Monfortino of the same vintage, it feels more like a “normal” (no pun intended) Barolo than its big brother, and I think that’s attributable to both its scale and texture. Sweet fruit, tannins certainly present but civilized, lovely length, and the remarkable balance that characterizes wonderfully made wine. I must say, it’s not a terrible thing to be alone with this particular bottle.

The Monfortino fan is thankful for you awareness of the distinctive nature of the 2 wines, but the value hound is certainly chewing you out in private

I opened a 1971 Cascina Cabinet Barbaresco Vigna Fascetto last night to go with Sunday night gravy and pork meatballs. Fully resolved, sublime and paired really well.
