1982 bordeaux dinner

Got a last minute invite to this dinner that was part of a charity auction. Am trying to compile notes from those in attendance. I tried to take notes but of course got distracted and stopped after 4 wines or so. At least some of my impressions:

all wines were donated by a local MD who i believe bought all on release. many were dbl decanted. not a single corked bottle

82 Dom Perignon-fantastic, young, yeasty, crisp, clean, hint of vanilla on the nose, lots of bubbles a touch of sweetness-96pts

calon segur-ripe, firm tannin,still young-94

Pichon lalande-heavenly,in a perfect drinking window,tied for my wotn-98

petrus/l’evnagile-may have mixed these up but preferred what i thought was the l’evangile

ausone-not sure what happened here. may not have gotten any or i was too blitzed to remember. wrote canon but don’t think there was any

then again so do most descriptors. we had a wine judge at the table, so waiting for a copy of his notes

I’d like to know who he awards the “double gold” to?

I have been in front of a few judges that were winos.

Probably didn’t mix them up. The l’Evangile is the better of the two wines IMO.

what’s your experience with 82 dom?

I could believe that. At a big '82 dinner a few years ago there were 4 bottles of each, and almost every person in the room preferred the l’Evangile.

I like the wine very much. Since '76, my four favorite original released vintages of DP are '96, '90, '85 and '82. They’re all very close in quality to me and even if the '82 would probably be my fourth place wine, I’m very happy to drink whenever I can. Which, btw, is much less often than the other vintages. I assume, the production level for the '82 was much lower than most other vintages since I rarely get offers in multiple case quantity for it.
