1978 Burgs

After drinking a 1978 Louis Latour Clos Vougeot last week I decided waiting any longer to drink this wine would be foolish. Cork crumbled into multiple parts; nose right out of the bottle was promising. Poured a bit into a Riedel Vinum Burgundy glass, the edges show bricking like would be expected from a wine this age but the core was a very clear light red, the nose had a bit of Pinot funk followed by a floral scent and an earthy component. In the mouth there is a bit of cherry followed by something I can’t put my finger on(tastes like sweet dark fruit?). Short finish, 10 - 15 seconds, would say this is a winner for the $32 I paid for it. Drink now as this is on the downward spiral but still a good wine, wish I had paired this with a Salmon. (88 pts.)

I sat this bottle up for 36 hours for sediment and was glad I did. The cork was saturated almost to the top and took a lot of care to remove in two pieces. Poured into a decanter to remove the large amount of sediment in the bottle. The color is brownish red and the wine is very clear in the glass. Nose at first was earthy, mushrooms, and a hint of dark fruit. First taste and I was thinking DOA. But came back to it 45 minutes later and while past its prime this wine still has some life left to it. Tannins and acid are the first thing I noticed but there is a nice bit of fruit still kicking after 30 years, not bad for a bottle with questionable provenance. Finish is a bit short 15- 20 seconds but it is pleasant. 13% alcohol, a full 2% less then many new world Pinot’s being made now. All in all a fun wine that I think hit its prime 10 years ago. No points given because I don’t think it is fair to assign points to a wine past its prime drinking window.

Thanks Ray for sending me this bottle. This is a great example of how well an older well m ade Burgundy can hold up. Light red in color, nose had the typyical Pinot funk that blew off quickly. The wine started out a bit disjointed but after some time it came together and was very nice. 45 Minutes in the decanter and it started to fall apart. (89 pts.)
