1970s Spring Mountain Cabernet

I’m kind of pissed and wonder if Todd’s mountain fruit post ruined Winebid recently for me. There was a 1976 Mount Veeder Bernstein Cab listed last week for $20, I planned to poach it for a birthyear treat, but the bidding pushed it into the mid $50s. Next week, a 1978 MV Bernstein Cab was listed with a start price of $75. Is there a mountain renaissance happening?

Actually, that 78 Mount Veeder Bernstein is a famous wine. $75 is a huge bargain.

The problem with those mid-1970s Mount Veeder wines is that used cheap corks. Finding one that hasn’t leaked is a real find.

2 and half years back I visit Spring Mountain with a friend who was in their wine club. Great grounds and nice tasting.

My friend ended up buying the 1979 Estate Cab directly from them that day, his birth year. Think he paid something like $225.

We drank it 7 months later at his wedding rehearsal. It was fantastic. Clearly an old cali cab, but the best I’ve had until a 74 Clos du Val Reserve recently.
