1970 La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza

This is a beautiful wine right now. Translucent in the glass, weightless on the palate. Smells like a spice shop. 44 and chugging along

Neil,
I’m on an old Rioja kick as well. Had a 1970 Frederico Paternina Rioja GR that recently outperformed my expectations by a long shot. I picked up a bunch of older riojas on WineBid, and some more at The Rare Wine Company. Spanish Table has a lot too. If you care to disclose your source, I’d appreciate it. Keep the notes coming!

Rare Wine. They have been offering old rioja at ridiculously low prices over the past year. I think this was $50

Great to hear…bought some of these from Rare Wine given they’re birth year wines. Need to crack one soon.

This wine has been gorgeous for 25 years. What a great lifespan. Need to get into more Rioja.

Sounds very good. To be quite honest though, I don’t think the La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Reserva really improves anymore after roughly 15 years. We had the 1976 and 1978 in a tasting recently, both bought upon release and stored in very good cellars, and they both seemed a bit past their prime. Still enjoyable, but much more tired than vintages from e.g. the 90s ('95, '98).
