Dark ruby and just starting to brick. Remarkable youthful color for a 50 year old wine. This sat in a decanter for four hours, which yielded a deep and penetrating bouquet of cedar, leather, tobacco, earth and red fruit. Notes of balsamic and spice emerge with vigorous swirling. Intense and concentrated in the mouth, with a taste of red cherries that linger on the palate on a long finish. Nice acidity. This bottle was wrapped in burlap with a label that was beginning to fray. From one of the all time great vintages in Rioja, well-stored bottles will still be vibrant in its 70th year. Traditional style Rioja remains a fabulous value relative to Burgundy, Bordeaux, et al.
