1964 birthday wines

A good mate Shifty has sequestered some tidy wines for his half century and these we consumed over three meals with friends and family.
It was indeed a rare privilege and pleasure.

1964 Dom Perignon- pretty mushroomy nose but a dense palate vv good

1964 Bouchard Baby Jesus - my second try of this wine and ironically the low fill bottle a few months ago sang with fruit and structure- this one was OK

1959 Besnard Freres Chambolle Musigny Village - pretty deft wine that faded all to quickly

1964 Dupont Tisserandot Mazis Chambertin - wow some pretty florals - good mouth feel - now sold to Faivley

1964 Leroy Grands Echezaux - wow this is ethereal with high toned florals and that peering through the waterfall experience of great burgundy

1964 Domaine Jacques Prieur Chambertin I have young wines by Prieur but they have never wowed me- this was the surprise - dense fruit - the real iron fist in the velvet glove- can I have some more please?

1964 Petrus Pomerol I have never had a Petrus before - and I was silenced by the rich deft fruit and length - seriously no rush to drink this but where to get another? we looked carefully at cork and capsule and label and all looked genuine

1964 Chateau Latour for a non bordeaux drinker (mainly because they need so long to sing) this was almost my wine of the weekend - fresh , pretty still structured with length and structure to continue. I was honoured to be in the presence of this wine. 98/100

Wynns Coonawarra Cabernet 1964 others tell me they have had a better bottle but for me this sang - pale and pretty for a cabernet. v good

1969 Bouchard Aine Julienas beaujolais - some age - but it was a gamay with no hint of burgundy a pleasurable mouth feel wine

1964 Leon Violland Beaune village - I have had 45 47 beaune village wines and I reckon they are ageworthy - solid fruit

2001 DRC Richebourg too young and tight after the older wines - its greatness is yet to come - This is why I rate 2001

2001 Gaja Sugarille Sangiovese new to me - it had a decant and was the better for it - vv good - needs more time

Seppelts Great Western 1964 85c certainly some good fruit but time has got away on this one

there were others but these were the highlights

Great wines. BTW I had a 1960 Wynns Coonawarra Cabernet last Friday which was singing, seems Coonawarra cabs do age well after 5 decades. It was a obvious cab but I picked it from the old world not ever having experienced development like it from Aussi.

It is always about good bottles-provenance- luck I reckon.
We decanted nothing apart from any younger italians.
The guys had tried a Mildara Peppermint Patty 1963 cabernet a legend wine- but they reckon it is in decline now.

Nice wines Michel.

Sorry I could not make it due to family commitments. I had purchased a '64 Cheval Blanc specifically for that occasion from Jeremy. Never mind some other time.

Great stuff. 64 Petit Village last week was super. Nice to see the Wynns perform so well.

Sanjay - hope your daughter is coping with VCE etc
we will catch up sometime
the Latour made me weep it was so good
