My wife has decided that we both need to lose a few pounds before summer so she’s putting us both on the 17 Day Diet. One of the taboo’s for the first seventeen days? Wine of any kind. Prayers appreciated.
Barbarians!
Screw that, just run more!
tell her you won’t eat any potatoes, rice, flour, corn instead for those 17 days and keep on drinking wine ;p
Wine Talk?
When my wife went to visit the grandkids for nine days I lost eight pounds simply by drinking no wine, eating leftovers and salad, and exercising 30 minutes most of the days. So there is a potential immediate reward.
Complete disclosure: In the three weeks since she returned, I’ve gained four back, due to larger portions (fresh tastes better than leftovers), making up for lost time on wine and consequently missing a couple of days of exercise.
So perhaps you can reasonably expect to lose about ten pounds in the process, and you’ll also find out if you’re an alcoholic. In that regard, my experience was reassuring:
First night: “I’d really want some wine.”
Second night: “I’d like some wine.”
Third night: “Doesn’t matter.”
Fourth night: " " [Didn’t cross my mind.]
Fifth night: “Why the heck do I have all this wine?!”
Russ, what is the 17 day diet?
Chicken breast, green veggie of choice and vodka. No wine but you can still have something that hushes the screaming monkeys for awhile, you can cook the chicken almost anyway you please and the weight will come off. Throw in some P90X and you don’t need no stinking 17 day diet.
Hell I run more just so I can drink… more!
You can still consume alcohol on a PSMF (which is what the first 17 days of the diet is). I wouldn’t do it daily as the calories still add up, but a few glasses a wine once a week isn’t going to stall your plans. Just stick to wines with low residual sugar, and exercise will power to ensure that you don’t stray from the important part of the diet while indulging.
I wonder why someone has to write a 200 page book to tell you how to eat right. It’s been covered here in just 1 sentence.
Lean protein, fresh fruit and veggies, no starch at night, drink lots of water and exercise 30 minutes every other day.

I’m about half way through an annual 40-day alcohol fast. It’s not that easy for me, I miss wine at dinner.
Any diet that’s based on calorie restriction or non-permanent changes is doomed to failure. You’d do better to make permanent changes in your diet and lose weight gradually as opposed to going on some fad diet for two weeks to lose a few pounds. If you go back to eating the way you did prior to the diet, you’ll gain the weight back. Moderate changes will yield moderate results, and that may be fine for your goals. But if you want dramatic results, then you need to make dramatic changes. But in any event, make changes you can keep long term.
You can certainly drink wine if you make enough other changes. Eat a boatload of cooked and raw vegetables (low calorie density), choose whole grains over refined carbs, and eat foods that are high in fiber (since fiber is filling without adding a lot of calories). And wash it down with some wine. Most of us know how to eat right, but making changes we can keep is the hard part.
Unfortunately, the collected dietary advice of this board may not be enough to change your wife’s mind and you may end up on a 17 day diet anyway. Good luck!

Some day, there will be the Holy Grail - A pill that obviates all this dieting without significant side effects! If you happen to be an early investor in that pharmaceutical company, you will be able to afford a wine cellar that is the envy of all of us! The publishing industry will be devastated.
Until then, it’s status quo and the solutions have already been discussed.

Absolutely correct on all points. My wife yoyo’ed for years with her weight going from one fad diet to the next. One of them included as much bacon as she could eat, loved that one! Another one was eat 2 lighter meals (breakfast and lunch) then eat/drink anything you want for dinner. The catch was you had to consume it all in 1 hour. We would go out to dinner and she would tell waiter please bring my cocktail, wine, appetizer, entree, side dish, dessert all at same time please. The looks were priceless!
About 5 years ago she finally figured it out, portion control. She now orders only off the appetizer side of menu when we go out and she only uses a small plate at home (filled once). She drinks as much wine as she wants and she is at least 15 - 20 pounds lighter than most of her peers. She looks great.
Then there is me… I am trying!
simple;
eat better
eat less
